Start with a Tight Range and Expand Slowly
New poker players tend to play too many hands. It feels boring to fold, and folding does not feel like progress. But selective hand selection — playing only strong starting hands from early positions and broadening slightly in later positions — is the foundation that almost every winning Casinous player builds on. You can always loosen up once you understand why certain hands play well in certain spots.
A simple starting point: from early position (UTG), only play premium pairs (AA, KK, QQ, JJ) and strong Broadway cards (AK, AQ suited). From the button, you can add suited connectors, mid pairs, and weaker Aces. This is not a rigid rule system — it is a training framework you can adjust once you develop feel for the game.
Aggression Beats Passivity Over Time
Passive poker — checking and calling with strong hands, hoping opponents bet into you — wins less money than it should. Aggressive play, meaning leading the betting and raising when you have equity, builds larger pots when you are ahead and forces opponents into mistakes. Casinous cash games and tournaments both reward controlled aggression over passive defence.
This does not mean betting blindly. It means when you decide to play a hand, commit to it. If you enter a pot, do it with a raise. If you connect on the flop with a strong hand, bet it. Slowplay (checking big hands to trap) has its place, but it is overused by recreational players who are afraid to build pots with their best hands.
Reading the Board and Your Opponents
Even before you think about reading other players, learn to read the board. A flop of J♠-T♠-9♠ is a wet, dangerous board with straights and flushes possible. A flop of K♦-7♣-2♥ is dry — very few combinations can beat top pair with a good kicker. Your bet sizing and continuation strategy should differ dramatically between those two boards.

Someone who check-calls the flop and leads the turn is telling a different story than someone who donk-bets the flop. Tilt: The Most Expensive Habit in Poker
Tilt is when an emotional state — usually frustration after a bad beat — causes you to play worse than you normally would. Every poker player experiences it. The difference between those who lose their bankroll to tilt and those who manage it is awareness and a simple exit plan: when you notice you are tilting at the Casinous table, log off. Come back the next day with a clear head. One tilt session can undo multiple sessions of disciplined, profitable play.
